Maria is the first player through to the quarters of the China Open in Beijing as she defeated Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-1 7-6 in an hour and 40 minutes.
Maria came out firing in her third match in the Chinese capital as she quickly raced into a 5-0 lead. Maria clinched the set with an ace to take the set 6-1 in 25 minutes. Throughout the set, Maria had a first serve percentage of 60% and won 91% of points on first serve and 62% on second serve. Maria was 100% on break points and didn’t face any on her own serve.
Serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Maria dropped her serve as Suarez Navarro levelled the set 5-5. The set was decided by a tie-break which Maria won 7-3 when the Spaniard netted a return.
In Friday’s quarter-final, Maria will play either No.7 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany or Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia.
