Maria won her first match at the China Open in Beijing after a 6-4 6-1 win over Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. The match lasted 90 minutes.
In the first set, at 5-4 on Kanepi’s serve after four breaks of serve, Maria’s game went up a gear as she broke and won set-point when Kanepi netted a forehand.
After a tricky first set, Maria broke the Estonian twice in the second set and won the set 6-1 to book her spot in the second round in the Chinese capital.
Maria will play world no.34 Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine in the second round. Maria has never played the 20-year-old before.
