Maria is through to the third round at the Australian Open in Melbourne after a impressive win over no.14 seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
The match lasted an hour and 21 minutes as Maria won 6-1 7-6.
Maria got the first break of the first set to lead 3-1 with a blistering cross court forehand winner. At 5-1, Maria broke her opponent for the third time in the set to take the first set when Sevastova netted a forehand.
The second set was a lot closer as there were six breaks of serve throughout the set and was decided by a tie-break which Maria won 7-4 when Sevastova hit a forehand error.
In Saturday’s third round match, Maria will play no.21 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany. Maria has played the 30-year-old seven times before and leads the series 4-3. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
