Maria is into the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. Under the lights, Maria defeated Petra Martic of Croatia 6-4 6-1 in an hour and 26 minutes.
Throughout the match, Maria hit 26 winners – 6 of which were aces. Maria had a first serve percentage of 56% and won 73% of points on first serve and 48% on second serve.
In the first set, Maria took a 5-2 lead, Martic battled back to 5-4, but in the 10th game, Maria prevailed to take the set 6-4 in 43 minutes. Maria dropped only one game in the second set as she sealed the win on match point with an ace.
In Wednesday’s second match, Maria will play another qualifier Alexandra Panova of Russia. Maria has never played the 25-year-old before.
