Maria eases through in Paris

Maria opened her French Open title defence today with a win as she defeated Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei 6-2 6-1 to advance to the second round.

A backhand down the line winner gave Maria the first break of the set to lead 2-0. In the final game of the set Maria broke again and won set point on a double fault as she won the set 6-2 in 27 minutes.

Maria’s form continued in the second set as she got her first break with a forehand winner to lead 3-1 and broke again to lead 5-1 to serve for the match. At Ad-40 in the final game, Maria hit a backhand crosscourt winner to book a spot in the last 64.

In the second round, Maria will face world no.77 Eugenie Bouchard of Canada. Maria has played the 19-year-old once before at Miami earlier this year and won 6-2 6-0.
