Maria battled through to the second round of the China Open in Beijing, China after a titanic 7-6 5-7 7-6 win over No.16 seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
The match lasted three hours and 5 minutes as Maria won the match on her fourth match point.
In the first set, Maria battled from a break down three times and eventually clinched the set in a tie-break. First set in 64 minutes.
Sevastova just edged the second set 7-5 to force a deciding set.
Maria started the third set strongly as she built a 5-2 lead but then the momentum switched to the Latvian as she won three games in a row including saving two match points. The set was decided by a tie-break as Maria just clinched the win as she took the tie-break 9-7.
In the second round, Maria will play Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.
