Maria defeats Riske in Cincinnati

Maria is into the second round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati after she defeated Alison Riske of the United States.

Maria won 6-3 7-6 in an hour and 55 minutes for her fourth straight win against the 29-year-old.

In the first set, Maria got the first break of serve to lead 5-3 when her opponent double-faulted. At 5-4 on Riske’s serve, Maria broke the American again as she took the set on her fifth set point with a cross court forehand winner.

Maria had to dig deep in the second set as she had to come back from 4-1 and 5-3 down as the set was eventually decided by a tie-break which Maria won 7-4 when Riske netted a forehand.

On Wednesday, Maria will face top seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia. Maria has played the 23-year-old twice before and the series is tied 1-1. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
