Maria has won her first match since July after she defeated Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore. Maria won 4-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and 47 minutes for her 13th win over the Pole.
The first set took 55 minutes as Radwanska broke Maria’s serve to serve for the set at 5-4 and served it out in the next game.
Maria took control of the second set by breaking Radwanska’s serve to lead 2-0. Radwanska got the set back on serve in the seventh game but Maria found her form in the next game as she broke again to lead 5-3 with a powerful forehand winner. In the next game, Maria held her serve to take the set 6-3 with a forehand winner.
The momentum continued for Maria in the third set as a forehand return winner gave her the first break to lead 2-1. Maria got another break to lead 5-2 but was broken serving for the match. Maria stepped up to serve for the match for a second time and came back from 15-40 down to win the match on her second match point when Radwanska netted a forehand.
Earlier in the day, Simona Halep defeated Flavia Pennetta 6-0 6-3 in the first match in the red group. Maria is currently second in the group behind Halep due to the number of sets won/lost.
