Maria has continued her unbeaten run under the lights (23-0) at the US Open in New York as she is through to the fourth round for the second consecutive year.
In her third round match, Maria defeated no.10 seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes.
In the first set, Maria took a 5-1 lead but lost the momentum when Ostapenko won two games in a row. At 5-3, Maria broke the Latvian to love and wrapped up the set in 43 minutes with a forehand lob.
Maria was the first player to hold her serve in the second set in the fifth game to lead 3-2 and didn’t look back as she then won three games in a row to book a spot in the last 16.
Maria will face No.30 seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain for a place in the quarter-finals on Monday. Maria has played the 29-year-old five times before and leads the series 4-1. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
