Maria came from a set down to defeat No.2 seed Li Na of China to advance to the semis of the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain. Maria won 2-6 7-6 6-3 in two hours and 31 minutes.
The reigning Australian Open champion looked to be in good position as she was up 6-2 4-3 with a break. Maria dug deep and broke in game eight of the second set to get the set back on serve. The set was decided by a tie-break which Maria won 7-5. Maria won set point on a netted shot.
In the final set, Maria built a 3-1 lead and the one break advantage proved to be decisive as Maria broke Li Na in the final game when the Chinese player double-faulted.
