Maria defeats Kvitova in Miami

Maria scored her first top 10 win of 2014 at the Sony Open Tennis in Miami. Maria defeated No.8 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 7-5 6-1 in an hour and 32 minutes to advance to the semis.

Maria was broken in the first game of the match but in the eighth game broke back when Kvitova dumped a backhand into the net to level the set 4-4. At 5-5 there was a rain delay that lasted five minutes, when play resumed, Maria held her serve to lead 6-5. In the next game, Maria broke Kvitova to love to take the first set 7-5 in 59 minutes.

From 5-5 in the first set to 5-0 in the second set, Maria proved too tough for Kvitova as she won seven straight games. Kvitova held her serve in the next game and Maria served a strong service game to book her spot in the semis.

In Thursday’s semi-final, Maria will play No.1 seed Serena Williams of the United States. Maria has played Williams seventeen times before and trails the series 2-15, here are the matches they have played against each other:
