Maria lost her first match at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals on Tuesday evening against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in Singapore. Maria lost 6-7 7-6 2-6 in three hours and 13 minutes.
In the first set there were four breaks of serve in the twelve games played and the set was decided by a tie-break which the Dane won 7-4.
The second set was another marathon as Wozniacki got the advantage early by breaking in the first game. Maria got the break back in the sixth game to level the set 3-3. Maria was broken again and Wozniacki was serving for the match at 5-4 and Maria broke and the set was decided by another tie-break which Maria won 7-5 when Wozniacki hit a shot wide. The set lasted an hour and 22 minutes as Maria had 19 winners to Wozniacki’s 7 winners.
Wozniacki got an early break in the third set to lead 2-0 but Maria broke back in the next game with a backhand return winner to get the set back on serve. At 3-2, Maria was broken again as Wozniacki took a 4-2 lead and the next two games for the win.
Maria will play Petra Kvitova and Agnieszka Radwanska in her other white group matches on Thursday and Friday.
