Maria defeated Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland to advance to the third round at Wimbledon. Maria won 6-2 6-1 in exactly an hour.
The last time Maria had played Bacsinszky was nearly eight years ago and she broke the Swiss players’ serve in the second game with a forehand down-the-line winner. Maria secured another break of serve to lead 5-1 when Bacsinszky netted a forehand. Serving for the first set, Maria was broken but broke Bacsinszky’s serve in the next game to take the set when Bacsinszky hit a shot long. First set: 6-2 in 36 minutes.
Maria hit a powerful forehand winner to get the first break of set two to lead 3-1 and continued the momentum with another break to lead 5-1 when Bacsinszky hit a forehand long. At 40-0 on Maria’s serve in the final game, Maria hit a forehand volley which Bacsinszky netted as Maria advanced to the last 32. Second set: 6-1 in 24 minutes.
In Saturday’s third round match, Maria will play world no.44 Alison Riske of the United States. Maria has played the 23-year-old once before in 2010 in Birmingham on grass and Maria won 6-2 4-6 6-1.
