Maria books spot in US Open 4th Round

At ten minutes past midnight on Saturday in New York, Maria booked her spot in the fourth round of the US Open. Maria defeated No.26 seed Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-2 6-4 in an hour and 41 minutes.

The first set took 40 minutes as Maria got the first break to lead 2-0 when Lisicki dumped a backhand into the net. At 5-2 on Lisicki’s serve on set point, Lisicki hit a double fault as Maria won the set 6-2.

The second set was more competitive as the intensity from both players increased. The first three games were breaks of serve and Lisicki went up 3-1. Maria broke Lisicki in the sixth game to level the set 3-3 when Lisicki hit a volley long. Maria broke again to lead 5-3 when Lisicki hit a shot long. Serving for the match at 5-3, Maria was broken and the set was back on serve. Maria re-grouped and broke Lisicki’s serve in the final game and won the match on her third match point when Lisicki hit a shot wide.

In Sunday’s fourth round match, Maria will play No.10 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. Maria has played Wozniacki seven times before and leads the series 5-2. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
