Maria is the last player through to the second round of the US Open after she defeated qualifier Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.
Maria won 6-2 7-6 in an hour and 50 minutes as she continued her run of not losing a match under the lights in New York.
The first four games were breaks of serve until Maria pulled away to win four games in row to take the set 6-2 in 40 minutes. In the final game of the set, Maria broke her opponent to love and won the set on a drop shot winner.
A powerful forehand winner gave Maria the first break in the fourth game of the second set to lead 3-1. Maria then won two more games to lead 5-1 but Schndyer came back to win four in a row to level the set 5-5. The set was decided by a tie-break which Maria won 8-6 with a scorching forehand return winner.
In Thursday’s second round match, Maria will be up against world no.51 Sorana Cirstea of Romania. Maria has played the 28-year-old once before in 2012 in Beijing in the second round and won 6-2 6-2.
