Maria books spot in US Open 2nd round

Maria is the last player through to the second round of the US Open after she defeated qualifier Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

Maria won 6-2 7-6 in an hour and 50 minutes as she continued her run of not losing a match under the lights in New York.

The first four games were breaks of serve until Maria pulled away to win four games in row to take the set 6-2 in 40 minutes. In the final game of the set, Maria broke her opponent to love and won the set on a drop shot winner.

A powerful forehand winner gave Maria the first break  in the fourth game of the second set to lead 3-1. Maria then won two more games to lead 5-1 but Schndyer came back to win four in a row to level the set 5-5. The set was decided by a tie-break which Maria won 8-6 with a scorching forehand return winner.

In Thursday’s second round match, Maria will be up against world no.51 Sorana Cirstea of Romania. Maria has played the 28-year-old once before in 2012 in Beijing in the second round and won 6-2 6-2.
