Maria is through to the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells after a 7-5 6-3 win over 25th seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
The first break of set went to Maria in the fifth game as she broke to love to lead 3-2 when Suarez Navarro double-faulted. Suarez Navarro immediately got the break back in the next game and the match was close until Maria broke to lead 6-5 when Suarez Navarro hit a shot long. Maria won her serve in the next game and won set point when Suarez hit a shot into the net off a strong serve.
The match continued to be close in the second set until Maria took control of the set when she broke to lead 4-3 and didn’t drop another game to book her spot in the last 16.
In Tuesday’s fourth round match, Maria will play Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain who upset No.14 seed Roberta Vinci of Italy. Maria has never played the Spaniard before.
