Maria books Beijing last 16 spot

Maria is through to the third round at the China Open in Beijing after a 6-2 6-2 win over Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine. The match lasted an hour and 25 minutes.

Maria raced into a 5-1 lead in the first set. Serving for the set, Maria dropped her serve in a marathon game but re-grouped in the next game by breaking Svitolina to take the set 6-2 in 47 minutes.

The first break of the second set went to Maria as she went up 3-1 when Svitolina hit a shot long. Svitolina broke Maria’s serve in the next game but Maria got the crucial break in the sixth game with a powerful forehand as she went up 4-2. In the final game of the match, Svitolina hit a wild backhand as Maria broke the Ukrainian’s serve to take the set 6-2.

In Wednesday’s third round match to be played at 7.30 PM local time, Maria will play Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Maria has played the Spaniard twice before and the series is tied 1-1, here are the matches they have played against each other:
