Maria battles through in New York

Maria is through to the second round of the US Open after she defeated 19-year-old Heather Watson of Great Britain 3-6 7-5 6-3 in two hours and 34 minutes.

Maria started the match slowly as she was broken in her first service game and was broken again in the middle of the first set. Watson took the first set 6-3.

Maria was broken in the first game of the second set but immediately got the set back on serve by breaking Watson in the next game. Maria took a 4-1 lead but Watson takes the next two games to level the set 4-4. At 6-5, Maria breaks Watson to take the match into a final set.

Maria broke Watson early to lead 2-0 in the third set and built a 4-1 lead, Watson then gets the set back on serve at 4-3. Maria composes herself in the next game to break Watson and serves her way into the second round.

On Wednesday, Maria will play Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus. Maria has played Yakimova once before at Roland Garros on clay in 2009 and won 3-6 6-1 6-2.
