Maria battled through to the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain after she scored a three set win over Christina McHale of the United States. Maria won 6-1 4-6 6-4 in two hours and 18 minutes over the world no.56.
On Manolo Santana Court, Maria got the first break of the set to lead 3-1 when McHale hit a shot wide and another to lead 5-1. Maria had a comfortable hold in the final game as McHale hit a shot long as Maria won the set 6-1 in 32 minutes. Throughout the set, Maria didn’t face any break points on her serve.
The second set proved to be closer as neither player gave away anything on their serve until the final game when McHale broke Maria to take the set 6-4 as she won her first set against Maria.
Maria showed her renowned fighting qualities in the third set as she came back from 4-1 down to win five straight games to book her spot in the last 16.
