Maria defeated No.8 seed Sara Errani of Italy 7-5 7-5 in two and a half hours to advance to the semis of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami.
The first set took 79 minutes as Maria broke Errani’s serve twice to lead 3-0. Errani got one of the breaks back in the next game. At 5-4, Maria was broken to love while serving for the set. Maria broke Errani in the next game as Errani hit a shot wide. Maria served for the set at the second time was asking as Errani netted a big serve on set point.
Maria got the first break of the second set to lead 3-2 when Errani netted a backhand. Errani managed to break back and in the tenth game, Maria saved three set points and broke Errani’s serve. Maria stepped up on her serve in the next game and won the match on a forehand winner.
In Thursday’s semis to be played at 1.00 PM local time (6.00 PM CET and 10.00 AM PT), Maria will play No.22 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. Maria has played Jankovic seven times before and leads the series 6-1, here the matches they have played against each other:
