Maria is through to the quarters of the Mutua Madrid Open after she battled past Caroline Garcia of France. Maria won 6-2 4-6 7-5 in two hours and 34 minutes.
In the fifth game in the first set after a trade of breaks, Maria broke Garcia with a powerful backhand winner to lead 3-2 and then won the next three games to take the set 6-2.
Garcia got the first break of the second set to lead 4-2. In the next game, Maria got the break back when Garcia netted a backhand. At 5-4, Maria was serving to stay in the net but Garcia broke to take the set 6-4.
The third set was close as both players held their serves until the eleventh game when Garcia was serving. Maria converted her second break point in the game when Garcia netted a backhand. In the next game, serving for the match, on her second match point, Maria served an ace to advance to the last eight.
In Thursday’s quarter-final, Maria will play No.5 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. This match will begin at 11.00 AM local time on Manolo Santana Court. Maria has played Wozniacki nine times before and leads the series 5-4. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
