Maria came through her toughest match so far at the French Open against No.19 seed Samantha Stosur of Austalia. Maria won 3-6 6-4 6-0 in just over two hours in Paris to advance to the quarters.
An inspired Stosur came out in the first set as she needed only one break in the seventh game to clinch the set 6-3.
Maria broke in the first game of set two but lost the advantage early on the set. Maria got the decisive break of the set when Stosur hit a backhand wide to lead 5-4. Maria won her serve in the next game to take the set 6-4 in 44 minutes.
The momentum had defintely turned onto Maria’s side of the court in the final set as she didn’t drop a game against the 2011 US Open champion and won match point on a forehand winner to wrap up her fourteenth win over Stosur.
In Tuesday’s quarter-final match, Maria will play Garbine Muguruza of Spain. Maria has played the 20-year-old once before in Rome in 2013 in the second round and won 6-2 6-2.
