Maria is through to the second round of the French Open in Paris after she defeated qualifier Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands.
Maria won 6-1 4-6 6-3 in an hour and 54 minutes in a match that was postponed from yesterday due to rain.
On Suzanne Lenglen Court, Maria started the match strongly as she won the first set 6-1 in only 26 minutes.
After taking a 3-1 lead in the second set, Maria could only win five of the next six games as Hogenkamp won the set 6-4.
Hogenkamp took a 3-0 lead in the third set. In the fifth game, Maria broke the Dutch player’s serve to get the set back on serve and continued the momentum as she didn’t drop another game as she advanced to the second round.
In Thursday’s second round match, Maria will face world no.50 Donna Vekic of Croatia. Maria has never played the 21-year-old before.
