Maria advances to US Open 3rd Round

Maria battled back from dropping the first set to advance to the third round of the US Open in New York. Maria defeated Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 4-6 6-3 6-2 in two hours and 37 minutes.

A shot into the net by Dulgheru gave Maria the first break of the match to lead 2-0 but Maria was unable to maintain the lead as she could only win two of the next eight games as Dulgheru took the set 6-4.

Maria got herself back into the match in the sixth game of the second set as she broke Dulgheru when the Romanian hit a shot long to lead 4-2. On set point in the final game, Dulgheru netted a forehand return as Maria won the set 6-3 in 54 minutes.

Maria clearly had the momentum in the third set as she dropped only two games as she advanced to the third round.
