Maria advances to Stosur meeting in Paris

Maria is through to the third round of the French Open in Paris after a 6-3 6-1 win over Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia. The match lasted an hour and 20 minutes as Maria advanced to the last 32.

In the first set, Maria got an early break to lead 1-0 but Diatchenko got the break back in the fourth game to get the set back on serve. A backhand error from Diatchenko gave Maria a second break to lead 3-2. In the final game of the set, Maria broke Diatchenko when the Russian double-faulted as Maria won the set 6-3 in 46 minutes.

The momentum Maria won from winning the first set continued into the second as Maria took a 5-0 lead. At 5-0, Maria had a match point on Diatchenko’s serve but couldn’t convert but wrapped up the win in the seventh game as Diatchenko hit a backhand long on match point.

In Friday’s third round match, Maria will play No.26 seed Samantha Stosur of Australia. Maria has played Stosur sixteen times before and leads the series 14-2. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
