Maria is through to the quarters of the Shenzhen Open in Shenzhen, China after her opponent Xinyu Wang of China retired due to injury.
A left thigh injury was the cause of the retirement as Maria booked her spot in the quarters with a 6-7 5-2 ret. win. The match lasted an hour and 47 minutes.
After the match, Maria said:
“Obviously, it’s a tough situation. It’s not the way either of us wants to finish the match, win or lose. I thought [Wang] was absolutely the dominant player in this match, and had all the opportunities to win it, even though I felt like I was finding my stride and getting a little bit closer to the line and being more aggressive. She has all the tools to play well, and I think she showcased that, and it’s obviously a very unfortunate way to end the match.”
MATCH CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN WILL BE PLAYED ON FRIDAY AT 1.00 PM LOCAL TIME
In Thursday’s quarter-final match, Maria will play top seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Maria has played the 20-year-old once before in the final in Tianjin in 2017 and won 7-5 7-6.
