Maria is through to the semis at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy after a 6-3 6-2 win over Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. The match lasted an hour and 32 minutes as Maria scored her fourth consecutive win over the former world No.1.
In the first set Maria got the first break to lead 3-1 with a return winner. Azarenka immediately got the break back in the next game. Maria got the crucial break of the set to lead 4-2 when Azarenka netted a backhand. At 5-3, Azarenka hit a return long as Maria took the set 6-3 in 45 minutes.
Maria took a 5-1 lead in the second set and missed a couple of match points on Azarenka’s serve but held her serve in the next game to book her spot in the semis.
In Saturday’s semi to be played at 4.30 PM, Maria will face world no.78 Daria Gavrilova of Russia. Maria has played the 21-year-old once before at Miami in the second round in March and Gavrilova won 7-6 6-3.
