Maria advances to Madrid semis

Maria is through to the semis of the Mutua Madrid Open for the first time after she defeated Kaia Kanepi of Estona 6-2 6-4 in an hour and 22 minutes.

The first set took 34 minutes as Maria raced into a 4-1 lead. Maria dropped only one more game throughout the set and won set point on an ace.

After a trade of breaks at the beginning of the second set, Maria got the decisive break to lead 4-3. At 5-4 40-15 on Maria’s serve, Kanepi hit a return into the net as Maria recorded her 20th consecutive win on clay.

In the semis to be played on Saturday at around 1.00 PM local time, Maria will play No.16 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Maria has played the 25-year-old eight times before and leads 6-4. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
