Maria advances to last 16 in Australia

Maria is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open in Melbourne after a 6-1 6-1 win over Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan. The match lasted 61 minutes.

Maria came out firing in the first set as she took the set 6-1 with three breaks of serve in only 26 minutes. Maria had 14 winners throughout the set to Diyas’ 2.

In the second set, Maria was broken in the first game but a backhand return winner by Maria in the next game levelled the set 1-1. A forehand winner gave Maria another break to lead 3-1 and an error by her opponent gave Maria a 5-1 lead to serve for the match. In the final game, serving at 40-30, Maria hit an ace to advance to the fourth round.

In Sunday’s fourth round match, Maria will play No.21 seed Peng Shuai of China. Maria has played the 29-year-old five times before and leads the series 4-1. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
