Maria came from a set down to defeat No.18 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia at the French Open in Paris. Maria won 0-6 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 58 minutes to advance to the semis.
After dropping the first set in only 29 minutes, Maria started the second set with a new energy as she broke in the first game when Jankovic double-faulted. Maria got another break to lead 4-1 when Jankovic went long with a forehand. Jankovic got one of the breaks back and at 5-4, Maria served out the set to love with a big serve out wide that Jankovic returned into the net as she won the set 6-4 in 46 minutes.
The first six games of the final set were close as both players held their serve but Maria got the crucial break to lead 4-3 with a blistering return of serve and didn’t drop another game as she won match point when Jankovic hit a forehand long as Maria advanced to the semis for the third consecutive year.
In Thursday’s semis to be played at 3.00 PM local time, Maria will play No.3 seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Maria has played Azarenka twelve times before and Azarenka leads the series 7-5. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
