Maria defeated Julia Goerges of Germany 6-1 6-4 in 66 minutes to advance to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
In Maria’s first match in over a month, she broke Goerges serve in the first game with a forehand return winner and followed it up with another break in the third game to lead 3-0. The set lasted only 28 minutes as Maria hit a winner to seal the set.
The second set was closer as there were no breaks of serve until the final game of the set when Goerges hit a forehand wide on Maria’s third matchpoint. Maria wrapped the set up 6-4.
In Monday’s third round match, Maria will play world no.79 Camila Giorgi of Italy. Maria has never played the 22-year-old before. This match is the third match on Stadium 1 and the order of play begins at 11.00 AM local time.
