Maria will be playing her ninth Grand Slam final on Saturday afternoon at the French Open in Paris. This is Maria’s third consecutive appearance in the final on the clay of Roland Garros. Maria’s opponent will be No.4 seed Simona Halep of Romania who is playing her first Grand Slam final.
The match will start at 3.00 PM local time (9.00 AM ET & 6.00 AM PT).
Maria has played the 22-year-old three times before and leads the series 3-0. Here are the matches they have played against each other:
2012 Indian Wells R3: Maria won 6-3 6-4
2012 Beijing R2: Maria won 7-5 7-5
2014 Madrid F: Maria won 1-6 6-2 6-3
Maria talks about working hard to be injury free:
“I’m very proud, because I worked hard to get myself injury free, and I had to work through some tough losses in the beginning of the season that I didn’t want to accept. I worked through them, I worked hard, and I’m in this position giving myself a chance.”
On playing tough matches:
“When you’re forced to be in those situations when you’re either not playing well or you find yourself in a losing position, I just don’t want to give up, because I work too hard to just let a match go. You put so much effort in to get to this position. If some things are not working out, I don’t just want to quit in the middle. Because when you lose the first set or a few games or you’re down a break, that’s not the end of the match. That’s the type of philosophy that I play with.”
In the WTA rankings, Maria is currently No.6, if she wins the final she move up one spot to No.5.
