Russia are tied 1-1 with the Czech Republic after day one of action of the Fed Cup final at the O2 Arena in Prague.
In the first match of day, Petra Kvitova defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6 6-1 6-1 to give the Czech team the first point.
Maria defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-3 6-4 in 89 minutes. in the Czech capital to level the tie for the Russians in the final match of the day.
In the first set, Maria got the first break to lead 4-2 when her opponent double-faulted but was broken back in the next game. Maria broke again to serve for the set at 5-3 and duly delivered as a forehand winner gave her the set.
Pliskova got the early advantage in the second set as she took a 2-0 lead. Maria re-grouped and won six of the next eight games to level the tie for Russia.
Tomorrow, the remaining three matches will be played. To win, Russia need to win two of the three matches. Maria will start play in the first match against Petra Kvitova and it begins at 12.00 PM local time.
