The Fed Cup final came down to the wire between Russia and the Czech Republic in Prague and the Czech team won the deciding doubles to take the Fed Cup title and defeat Russia 3-2.
In today’s first match, Maria gave Russia a 2-1 lead. Maria defeated the Czech No.1 Petra Kvitova 3-6 6-4 6-2.
In the opening game, Maria was broken and again in the final game as the Czech took the set 6-3 in 46 minutes.
The second set was tense as there were lengthy games and Maria came back from 4-4 15-40 on Kvitova’s serve to serve for the set. Maria stepped up to serve for the set in the next game and showed nerves of steel as she won the game to love to force a decider.
In the third set, Maria broke to lead 3-2 and didn’t look back as she won the next three games to give Russia the lead.
Karolina Pliskova levelled the tie for the Czechs as she defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3 6-4.
In the deciding doubles match, Pliskova and Barbora Strycova defeated Pavlyuchenova and Elena Vesnina 4-6 6-3 6-2.
