allure: Maria Sharapova Talks Sock Tans, Tennis-Proof Manicures, and Her Favorite French Beauty Products
Maria Sharapova might have taken home the French Open trophy this week-but there were a couple other things she made sure to pick up while she was in France. “I love buying hairspray and hand creams from the pharmacies in France. The Elnett is light with a strong hold-much better than the version in the U.S.-and the hand creams in Paris are so great,” she says. We caught up with the tennis (and beauty) pro to hear about the rest of her routine.
Congratulations! How did you celebrate your win?
“We finished the match quite late so about 15 of us went to a little Italian restaurant in the city for a quiet dinner. We didn’t party too hard!”
Tournaments are long (and sweaty). What’s your go-to sunscreen?
“Suncreen has been a part of my life for a very long time. Two years ago, I started using Supergoop (Sharapova is a co-owner of the brand). I love that it feels seamless on my skin. I’m a great test person for sunscreen because I sweat so much and need something that lasts. If it runs in my eyes, I’m uncomfortable right away.”
Any tricks for putting on sunscreen every day?
“I keep a bottle of it in my shower and apply it all over as I towel off. That’s the best time to put on sunscreen. It’s important to remember your neck, because when you have a shirt or jacket on, you don’t always remember to apply it there.”
What do you do if you get burned?
“I do occasionally get burned on my feet, because I get sock tans lines and try to tan my feet a bit on vacation. I usually ask the hotel for natural aloe vera, which I love.”
What’s your go-to hairstyle when you’re playing tennis?
“I’m so lazy, so it’s just the standard ponytail. I have a lot of flyaways so I spray my ponytail with Elnett, then clip back any loose pieces with bobby pins.”
I have to ask…do you wear makeup out there?
“Never. That’s the last thing I think about. But post-match I do use a Kanebo concealer pen under my eyes and around my T-zone.”
Your manicure looked pretty great clutching that trophy!
“I actually didn’t have nice nails for years, but in the last year I’ve been better about getting consistent manicures and using a protein-based nail polish. I typically wear Essie Mademoiselle and occasionally a bright OPI orange for summer.”
Your legs always gleam-is that lotion or sweat?
“Probably just sweat! But I do gets sports massages a few times a week, and they use an oil that’s very nourishing.”
Are massages relaxing for you?
“I’m usually doing emails and working.”
Are you getting one right now?
Ok, so what’s your off-court beauty routine?
“It’s a little bit of mascara, I love Chanel volumizing mascara, and a lightweight tinted moisturizer from Chanel. A little blush, a little lip. I like Chanel lip pencils because they look matte and natural. I don’t like glossy lips.”
How do you keep your blonde so blonde?
“I see Tracey Cunningham in Los Angeles for highlights. I see her so rarely, that when I do go, she does the whole nine yards-three hours of color, conditioning, and a blowout. Then I say, ‘See you in three months!'”
Any favorite beauty treatments?
“I like microdermabrasion because I get sun spots. It feels like a really good scrub and removes all the dead skin.”
Do you have a signature scent?
“Right now I’m wearing Avon Luck (Sharapova is a spokeswoman for the brand). Before that, I used Stella McCartney. It’s always a mix.”
