Maria has won her second title of 2015 at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy after a 4-6 7-5 6-1 win over No.10 seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. The match lasted two hours and 35 minutes as Maria won her 35th career title.
This is Maria’s third title in Rome having previously been the champion in 2011 and 2012.
In the first set, Suarez Navarro got the only break of the set in the fifth game as she won the set 6-4.
A backhand winner gave Maria her first break of the match in the second set to lead 3-1. The Spaniard broke Maria in the next game to get the set back on serve. Maria broke in the eighth game to lead 5-3 to serve for the set but was broken by her opponent. In the final game of the set, Maria broke Suarez Navarro to love as she took the set 7-5.
In the third set, Suarez Navarro got an early break in the first game but Maria came storming back to take five games in a row. In the final game at 40-15 on Maria’s serve, Maria hit a crosscourt forehand winner to win her eleventh title on clay.
Maria moves up one spot to No.2 in the WTA rankings with 7710 points when the new rankings are released on Monday.
Maria will now head to Paris to play the second Grand Slam of the year at the French Open which begins on May 24th.
