Maria has won her first title of 2015 at the Brisbane International in Brisbane, Australia after a 6-7 6-3 6-3 win over No.2 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. The match lasted two hours and 38 minutes as Maria won her 34th career title.
In the first set, Maria took a 4-1 lead and had two set points at 5-4 but was unable to take the set as Ivanovic took the set in a tie break in 62 minutes.
Maria got the first break of the second set to lead 2-1 when Ivanovic double-faulted and again in the final game of the set when Ivanovic netted a forehand return. 6-3 in 48 minutes.
A backhand return gave Maria the first break of the deciding set as she led 2-0. Ivanovic got the set back on serve in the fifth game by breaking Maria’s serve. After three more breaks of serve, Maria came out to serve for the match and at Ad-40, on her third match point, Ivanovic netted a forehand as Maria won the title in Queensland’s capital.
Throughout the match Maria hit 47 winners to 43 unforced errors. Maria served 10 aces and had a first serve percentage of 52%. Maria won 73% of points on first serve and 50% on second serve.
This is Maria’s first title in Brisbane and her second title in Australia (Australian Open 2008).
Maria remains No.2 with 7335 points when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday. Maria is now 681 points behind No.1 Serena Williams.
Maria’s next tournament will be the first Grand Slam of the year at the Australian Open in Melbourne beginning on January 19th.
