Maria has successfully defended her Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title after she defeated No.9 seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in Stuttgart, Germany. Maria won 3-6 6-4 6-1 in two hours and 3 minutes for her third consecutive Stuttgart title.
Maria is unbeaten in 13 matches on the indoor clay at the Porsche Arena. This is Maria’s 30th career singles title and the first time she has won the same tournament three times.
Ivanovic came out firing in the first set by taking a 5-0 lead. Maria re-grouped by taking three consecutive games but it wasn’t enough as Ivanovic won the next game to take the set 6-3.
In the second set, Ivanovic took control of the second set as she led 3-1 and had a point for 4-1 but Maria’s comeback began as she broke Ivanovic with a forehand winner to get the set back on serve. Maria won four of the next five games to take the second set 6-4 in 46 minutes.
The momentum change continued in the third set as Maria broke Ivanovic’s serve with a winner and then won five of the next six games to secure a singles titles win for every year since 2003.
In the WTA rankings to be released on Monday, Maria remains No.9 with 3961 points.
