Maria played and won her last match of 2014 at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals as she defeated Agnieszka Rawanska of Poland in Singapore. Maria won 7-5 6-7 6-2 in three hours and 9 minutes in her final white group match.
Even though Maria won this match, Maria is out of the tournament because she had to win this match in two sets to have a chance of qualifying for the semis.
The first set lasted 62 minutes as there were seven breaks of serve. Maria broke Radwanska to serve for the set at 5-4 but Radwanska broke back to level the set 5-5. Maria had a second chance to serve for the set when she broke Radwanska to lead 6-5 and this time Maria held her serve to love and won set point with a forehand lob.
Maria went up 5-1 in the second set but the lead slipped away as Radwanska won five straight games to lead 6-5. Maria was unable to convert three match points and the set was decided by a tie-break which Radwanska won 7-4.
In the third set, Maria broke Radwanska to lead 4-2 and again in the final game as she hit a forehand return winner on match point as she played her final point of 2014.
