Maria has won her second title of 2014 at the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid, Spain. In the final Maria defeated No.4 seed Simona Halep of Romania 1-6 6-2 6-3 in an hour and 57 minutes.
Maria remains unbeaten on clay so far in 2014 and has won 11 straight matches. Maria is the only active player to have won all the current European premier clay events.
Halep came out firing in the first set as she quickly won the set 6-1. Things started to go Maria’s way in the second set as she broke in the first game with a backhand down-the-line winner. Another break in the seventh game gave Maria a 5-2 lead. On setpoint, Halep netted a backhand as Maria won the set 6-2 in 43 minutes.
Maria’s form continued in the final set as she got a double break to lead 4-1. Halep got one of the breaks back but Maria proved to be too strong as she won the set 6-3 for her 31st career title.
In the WTA rankings to be released on Monday, Maria will move up to No.7 with 4261 points.
