Maria has won her fourth title of 2014 at the China Open in Beijing after a 6-4 2-6 6-3 win over No.3 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. The match lasted two hours and 28 minutes as Maria won her 33rd career title.
After two breaks in the first set, Maria broke Kvitova’s serve in the final game when the Czech hit a shot out as Maria won the set 6-4.
Kvitova took a 4-1 double-break lead in the second set. Maria got one of the breaks back in the fifth game but Kvitova won the next two games to take the set 6-2.
A forehand into the net gave Maria the first break of the third set as she took a 2-0 lead. In the fifth game, Kvitova broke Maria to get the set back on serve. Maria got the break back in the next game to lead 4-2 when Kvitova hit a shot wide. At 5-2, on Kvitova’s serve, Maria had a match point but was unable to convert it as Kvitova held her serve in a long game. At 5-3, Maria held her serve to love to take the title.
This is Maria’s first title in Beijing and her second premier mandatory title of 2014 as she won Madrid in May.
Maria will move up to No.2 with 6680 points when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday.
Maria will play her final event of 2014 at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore beginning on October 20th.
