Maria has won her 28th career title at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells after she defeated No.8 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-2 6-2. The match lasted an hour and 21 minutes.
This is Maria’s second Indian Wells title after last winning the title in 2006.
In Maria’s best performance of the week, she hit 4 aces to 1 double faults. Maria hit 33 winners to 25 unforced errors.
In the first game of the match, Maria broke Wozniacki’s serve to love and won the game on a winning crosscourt forehand. Maria broke again to lead 5-2 when Wozniacki hit a shot long. In the final game of the set, Maria saved two break points and hit a blistering forehand down the line to win the set.
Maria started the second set in similar fashion to the first set as she broke Wozniacki’s serve in the first game and again to lead 5-2. In the final game of the match, Maria held her serve to love and won match point when Wozniacki netted a return.
On Monday, Maria will move up to No.2 in the WTA rankings.
