Roland Garros 2012 Champion!

Maria has won the fourth Grand Slam of her career at Roland Garros in Paris.  In the final, Maria defeated No.21 seed Sara Errani of Italy 6-3 6-2 in 1 hour and 29 minutes. Congratulations Maria!  

Maria has now completed the career Grand Slam, having already won Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008. Maria has joined Maureen Connolly, Doris Hart, Shirley Fry Irvin, Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams as the only players to have achieved this.

Here is what happened in the match:
First set
1-0 - Maria holds her serve to 15 and wins the game on a ace
2-0 - A break for Maria as Errani hits a backhand long to give Maria a 2-0 lead
3-0 - A big ace down the middle on game point puts Maria in front
4-0 - Another break for Maria 
4-1 - Errani gets one break back as she wins her first game of the match
4-2 - Errani wins her first service game as Maria hits a forehand wide on game point
5-2 - Maria stops Errani's run of games as she holds her serve to 15 and wins the game when Errani hit a shot long
5-3 - Errani saves two set points as she holds her serve to make Maria serve for the set
6-3 - At 30-30, Maria hits a forehand winner to give her a third set-point and takes it on a backhand down the line winner

Second set
1-0 - Maria breaks to love in the first game of the second set as Errani hits a shot long on game point
2-0 - Maria leads 40-15, Errani gets the game to deuce and Maria wins the next two points, wins game point on a backhand winner
2-1 - Errani holds in the third game of the set
3-1 - A forehand in the net by Errani give Maria a 3-1 lead 
4-1 - After a long deuce game, Maria finally gets the break when Errani nets a volley
4-2 - Errani breaks Maria. Maria up 30-0 in the game and loses three straight points to give Errani the game
5-2 - A backhand down the line gives Maria aother break
6-2 - A backhand winner at 30-30 sets up Maria's first match point as she hits a shot long to take the game to deuce.  Errani gets a break point, Maria saves it and has another matchpoint and Errani wins it on a drop shot.  At deuce, Maria serves an ace for another match point and Errani nets a shot as Maria wins her fourth Grand Slam title

In the WTA rankings to be released on Monday, Maria will be no.1 with 9490 points - nearly 700 points ahead of No.2 ranked Victoria Azarenka.
