Maria is through to the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid after she defeated Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-4 6-3 in 77 minutes.

Maria broke Zakopalova to love in the first game of the first set and raced into a 4-1 double-break lead.  Zakopalova got one of the breaks back in the next game but Maria kept in front as at 40-30 in the final game of the set, Maria hit a strong serve which Zakopalova hit into the net to give Maria the set 6-3 in 44 minutes.

In the second set, Maria built a 5-2 lead.  In the next game on Maria's serve, Maria had a matchpoint but Zakopalova saved it and broke Maria's serve.  Maria re-grouped in the next game and broke Zakopalova to love and won the match when Zakopalova double-faulted.

In the third round Maria will play Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.  Maria has played Safarova once before at this tournament two years ago and lost in straight sets.
