Maria has won her first medal at the Olympics. Even though Maria
lost 0-6 1-6 to Serena Williams of the United States she has won a
silver medal for Russia on Wimbledon's Centre Court.
After the match, Maria said: "Serena was playing incredibly
confident tennis today, particularly considering how windy it was.
With every match in the tournament she was playing better and
hitting harder. There are always things you think you could have
done better, but my opponent just played too well today; she was
too quick and too powerful. She wasn't making many mistakes
either. A silver medal means a lot to me, though. It's always
disappointing to lose in the final but it's great to get a medal in
my first Olympic Games. For sure I'll be trying again in Rio.
I want that gold medal!"
In the WTA rankings, Maria has moved up one spot to number two.
Maria has 8720 points - 100 points behind Victoria Azarenka.
