Maria has won her first title of 2012 at the Porsche Tennis
Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. Maria defeated world No.1
Victoria Azarenka 6-1 6-4 in the final.
Maria had a great week in Stuttgart by winning the title and
defeating three players in the top five (Azarenka, Kvitova and
Stosur). This is Maria's 25th career title and her first ever
tournament win in Germany.
Maria's stats throughout the match were excellent as she had 63%
on first serve and when her first serve went in she won it 84% of
the time. Maria had 31 winners to 13 unforced errors
In the first set, Maria broke Azarenka to love in the second game
and won the game when Azarenka hit a shot long. Maria broke
Azarenka again to lead 5-1 and in the final game of the set at
40-30, Maria hit an ace on a second serve to take the set 6-1 in 30
minutes.
The second set was a lot closer and Maria got the decisive break
of the set when she broke to lead 4-3 when Azarenka hit a backhand
into the net. In the final game of the set, Maria got to 40-0
on her serve and on matchpoint, Azarenka hit a shot long as Maria
took the match in 1 hour and 24 minutes.
