Maria out of US Open

Posted on September 7, 2012

Maria is out of the US Open at the semi-final stage. Maria lost 6-3 2-6 4-6 in 2 hours and 42 minutes to top seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

In the first set, Maria broke Azarenka's serve twice (both game points were double-faults) to lead 5-1. Azarenka took the next two games and Maria won the next game on her serve to take the set 6-3 in 40 minutes.

Maria broke early in the second set to lead 1-0 but couldn't maintain advantage as she dropped the next four games to trail 1-4. Maria could win only one more of the next three games as Azarenka took the set 6-2 in 48 minutes.

Due to the heat in New York, the heat rule was in affect at the beginning of the third set and both players took the full 10 minutes. When play resumed, both players held their serve until Azarenka broke Maria to lead 5-4 and then held her serve in the next game to take the match. The set took 74 minutes.
