Mladenovic & Nestor Win The Mixed !!! Congratz to them:)

Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor won the Australian Open together, continuing to establish themselves as the team to beat on the Grand Slam mixed doubles circuit.

The French-Canadian duo didn't drop a set en route to the final and continued that trend again, taking out No.6 seeds Sania Mirza and Horia Tecau for the title, 63 62. They fought off all five break points they faced and broke their opponents four times - and while both teams had positive winners-to-unforced errors ratios, Mladenovic and Nestor were a better 24-14 (Mirza and Tecau were 14-8).

"We knew Sania has a big forehand, so we tried to keep it away from having her get comfortable in a crosscourt rally with it," Nestor said. "I think we did a good job of returning Horia's serve, putting some pressure on him, and he probably didn't return as well in the match today as he normally does."

Nestor also gave props to Mladenovic for something else that's critical in mixed doubles.

"She's very good at returning the men's serve," Nestor said of Mladenovic. "I'm sure a lot of girls aren't afraid to return the men's serve out there, but whether they're able to do it is another story."

"The first thing is not to be afraid of returning the men's serve, because obviously it's going really fast," Mladenovic commented. "And the second thing is that I like the challenge. I like going for it and trying to return it. They get crazy when the return comes back or even comes back as a winner."

Whatever their strengths or weaknesses, what they're doing is working. Mladenovic and Nestor have now played the last four Grand Slams together and have put together a 17-2 record - finals of the French Open, champions at Wimbledon, semifinals at the US Open and now champions in Oz.

Mladenovic has been approached by other players before, but maintains Nestor is her go-to guy.

"Daniel is the first and only partner for me," Mladenovic said. "I think it's tough to do better.

"At the beginning, I didn't know many men's doubles players on tour. It started with Robert Lindstedt - another French player introduced me to him. I asked him once if he wanted to play, I think last year before the French Open, but he was busy, so I gave up. Then he told me that his partner, who was Danny at the time, was free. I was shy to ask Daniel if he would play; a few days later he came and asked me. I was like, 'Of course we'll play.' For me it was a huge thing that Danny asked me to play.

"Now that we're starting to get good results, a few players are asking me when he's going to retire!"

"Who are they - he wants to know," Nestor said.

"Well, all the men's doubles specialists," Mladenovic said. "Robert, Kubot asked me, Qureshi..."

"They ask when I'll retire or they just ask you to play?" Nestor added.

"I tell them no, I'm playing with Danny forever now," Mladenovic replied. "They say, 'Okay, we can play once he stops. We hope it's going to be soon.' Pretty much all the teams we beat joke about it!"

Maria, and also Sara Errani, Angelique Kerber (who won last year) and Petra Kvitova, have (they are four seeds) a "bye" through to the second round, where Maria could meet Daniela Hantuchova.

Leaves a "bad taste" in my mouth, too, N. But Masha said it years ago--demonstrating perhaps too much wisdom for a young girl :P

www.opengdfsuez.com :

The top seeds spoke to the press before the tournament began.

Maria :

« It’s obviously a big change after Australia, adjusting from outdoors to indoors and adjusting to the climate. It’s actually nice to be back in winter !

You obviously have to understand that I was out for five months (with a shoulder injury) and nothing substitutes for competition. Some tough matches cost me in Australia, but it’s part of the process. You can’t expect not to feel rusty. My shoulder’s actually feeling really good, but my coach (Sven Groeneveld) and I are looking at adjusting my service because I count on playing for many more years.

It’s been a seamless transition (working with Sven). At this level, little things can make a real difference. »

In french :

Pavlyuchenkova Wins Paris Opener...DAVAI !!!

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova overcame a nightmare start to defeat Francesca Schiavone in the first round of the Open GDF SUEZ on Monday.

In three previous visits to the Stade Pierre de Coubertin, Pavlyuchenkova has never been beyond the second round and she looked set for another early exit when she dropped a one-sided opening set in just 27 minutes.

At the start of the second set, though, the Russian gained a belated foothold in the match and forced a decider when she broke Schiavone to love in the final game. It was a setback from which the Italian never recovered, Pavlyuchenkova rattling off the first five games of the third set as she eased to a 16 64 61 victory.

The opening day's only other main draw match saw Klara Zakopalova bring an early end to the hopes of French wildcard Caroline Garcia. Two years ago, Zakopalova reached the semifinals in the French capital, and following a topsy-turvy opening set she eventually ran out a comfortable 76(4) 62 winner to book a second round meeting with No.4 seed Angelique Kerber.

Tournament directors Régis Brunet and Amélie Mauresmo have done an excellent job in attracting a star-studded field to this year's tournament, with Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova and Kerber leading the way.

All four have enjoyed success at the venue in the past, and it holds particularly special memories for Kerber, who won her first WTA title here two years ago. The German arrived in Paris a week ago and is feeling upbeat about her chances.

"I've been here one week already so I've had some practice indoors and I'm feeling good," Kerber said at Monday's All-Access Hour. "Of course, in Australia it was very hot and it's nice to be back and have the change - I love Europe and even the snow!

"I think I had a great start to this year - I reached the final in Sydney and in Melbourne I was also playing good tennis. I'm always improving and all the time looking forward to my next matches and next tournaments."

Also looking forward to getting back indoors is 2011 champion Kvitova, who will be eager to banish the memories of her shock first round defeat to Luksika Kumkhum at the Australian Open.

"It took some time to get over," Kvitova said. "But it was only one match and I think I played well before that and hopefully I can get that winning feeling back here.

"I have good memories from this tournament and I hope these memories help me this year.

Maria plays today against Daniela Hantuchova. I hope that she will win this tournament ! That should be a good "omen" for Roland Garros !

Yes, Angelique Kerber won this tournament two years ago, and no the last year (see a previous post that I can't modify because I can't use the "function" Edit).

Yesterday, Maria thrashed Daniela in just over an hour : 6-0, 6-1.

Maria :

« I wanted to start well against Daniela because she’s a very tough opponent. She always plays well against the top players. My service is the one thing I’ll always have to work on after the shoulder problems I’ve had. I saved quite a few break points in the second set and I served 10 aces, so it was nice to get myself out of trouble with the service. »

Other winners : Angélique Kerber, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Galina Voskoboeva.

The previous day, Kristina Mladenovic has defeated Simona Halep (worldwilde number : 10) : 7-6, 6-4.

Yesterday, Mona Barthel, who won the tournament last year, was defeated by Kirsten Flipkens. (3-6, 6-4, 2-6) Other loser : Roberta Vinci (winner : Elina Svitolina.)

In french :

Hier, Maria a infligé une cuisante défaite à Daniela (durée : environ 1 heure 10) : 6-0, 6-1

Maria :

(3-6, 6-4, 2-6) Autre perdante : Roberta Vinci (qualifiée : Elina Svitolina.)

Quotable Sugar-Quotes: Maria Sharapova...

On bringing Sugarpova to share..."I know I promised everyone candy if I won the tournament, but I figure if I won a round I'd give you guys some candy, so you guys can share some. Sorry they only gave me one bag. We're cheap." On balancing the expectations of Sugarpova with, well, Sharapova..."I've had a lot of expectations throughout my whole career. This won't be the first week and won't be the last one. I've managed a lot of things in my life quite well. One of the things that has been quite important to me, that I learned from a very young age, was that I really had a passion for tennis and nothing gives me a better feeling than being a tennis player and improving at my job. But it's brought me so many great opportunities as well that I've been able to learn from. I've met talented people in very different areas that I never imagined I would work with or have the experience of meeting. "If you can keep it very fun and enjoy the work you're doing at your daily job, you feel fresh and can have a new perspective when you go out on the court, where you're not thinking 24/7 about your job." On speaking French..."Well now I have a French physio, so I have no excuse, but it's a language I've wanted to learn for a long time, and I studied it for a couple of years when I was I think 10 or 11. And when I got injured, that was the first thing I did - I took classes. Everyone thought I was crazy but then I happened to win Roland Garros and I used two or three words I learned. You never know when it'll benefit you. "I'm not that great at speaking French, but I hope I can still improve." On the WTA's newest Top 10 player, Simona Halep..."She had a great year last year. She's been playing really good tennis. I don't think I played her last year but she played at an extremely high level. Obviously we'll see how she does this year, but she's always had a really good presence on the tour and hopefully she can retain that level this year." On whether she has any opponents she fears..."It's tough to look past whoever you're playing next. I don't like to look too far ahead because every match can be a different challenge, no matter who you play, and you have to just be about that, no matter what anyone is ranked or what you're ranked. There's a reason we go out and play matches and I hope that with every match I can play better. That's my goal here - just to keep improving my game." On whether she thinks she can get back to No.1 this year..."It's a big challenge but that's why I'm here. That's why I play tennis - to try to be at the top."

Good for her! Lots of people in that market and Maria has a huge following there. See no conflict with

Samsung. May even be an enhancement to their relationship, providing Celcom deals with Samsung. I don't consider

this kind of action"money-grubbing". It's more the mark of a business-woman whoom I find more and more

intriguing. That's my girl, Maria!!
