Russia Starts Strong at Davis Cup With Tursonov Win

Dmitry Tursonov and Daniel Evans

MOSCOW, April 5 (R-Sport) – Russia got off to a strong start in the Davis Cup Friday as Dmitry Tursonov eked out a win over Great Britain’s Daniel Evans.

Tursonov, ranked 67 in the world, took his opening singles match 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at Coventry’s RICOH Arena despite a fighting effort from Evans, the world number 325.

Tursonov, who has seven ATP Tour wins, recovered from a lost tie-breaker in the second set to capture the third, rallying back from a 15-40 deficit before taking the set on a double fault from Evans. After winning the fifth set, Evans carried momentum into the six, but Tursonov got ahead 3-2 and never looked back.

World number 80 Evgeny Donskoy faces James Ward, ranked 214 on the ATP Tour, on Sunday.

"I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi." said Sharapova Maria.

Djokovic Wraps Up Serbian Win; Raonic Clinches Historic Tie
USA 1 SERBIA 3
Venue: Taco Bell Arena, Boise, ID, USA (hard – indoor)

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic clinched the Davis Cup quarter-final tie for Serbia against the USA on Sunday, defeating Sam Querrey 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-0.

Having suffered an ankle injury in the first set, Djokovic pushed on, saving six of the seven break points he faced. In the final set, Djokovic won 25 of 32 points to claim victory in two hours and 35 minutes.

“I am happy I managed to play the whole match,” said Djokovic. “I played really well in the third and fourth sets. I am sorry for team USA but it was a thrilling weekend for all of us.”

The 25-year-old Djokovic improved to 6-1 against Querrey and notched his second win over the American this year, adding to his fourth-round victory at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Serbia topped the USA for the second time in four years, following its first-round win three years ago in Belgrade.
