So, here we are, the main event of the clay season is upon us! Maria's clay season so far has been very good and who knows, perhaps the best is yet to come! This week is rather crucial for most players since it is the only time available for rest and recuperation before the Slam.

It goes quick with all these tournaments !!!!  I hope Maria will be rested in time and is able to empty her head a bit ! Lot's of pressure on her , big favorite for the title. Please , please, please let Serena not be in her half of the draw. For me she is the only other possible winner in Paris. By the way, will Maria play in Birmingham this year or will she only play Wimbledon ?? Ps; Maria if you want to get away from tennis for a day or 2 , you can come over to my house, bed available , breakfast ready and you can enjoy the nice weather in the garden, free transportaion to Paris ( wishfull thinking but who knowns , you can always try )

I'm positive she stated somewhere that she won't have Birmingham as her lead up, and take a short break after RG because of the extended grass season. For me, Wimby is her WARM UP tournament before the Olympics, which is the main 2012 goal.

Oy, why do I keep falling for reading about MS in the tennis web press and ESPN/SI? More to the point, why do I keep reading the comments below the articles? I have to figure it's a dead heat between Serena and MS for the WTA player certain fans most like to spew vile remarks toward. Oh well, I suppose MS is crying all the way to the locker room with her No. 2 ranking (earned in relatively few tours compared to the rest of the top ten or 12) and her two titles so far. Sorry, I just picked this thread to vent. On to Paris!

The W sisters fanatics spew venum in every tennis forum any time Maria wins or looses. Maria haters outnumber Maria's fans 3 to 1 in the tennis forums. It is a very up hill battle for us Maria's fans. Some times Maria helps these fanatics by making comments like Supporting Serena for pulling out of Rome.

^ exactly. The way i see it is that both Serena, and her 'fans' are still hating over Maria for 'stealing' wimby off her. It's pathetic really, you don't see me hating on Petra for her win at Wimbledon last year..

Okay, now pay attention (007). Go to Eurosport UK Tennis section. Main Story Kims retirement again. Scroll down a little and you will see on the right 'Related Videos'. One of them is entitled 'Sharapova Favorite going into Paris'. Unfortunately I couldn't isolate the link so just click on it. Listen to what Maria says and say to yourself, 'Damn, Philli Wan was right all along'. She openly admits that in Tournaments she has to conserve her strength to get through the next rounds because she's not as strong as the other players. Haven't I always said that 3 set matches are a killer for her?  You all call me a hater for putting her down all the time, and now Maria finally admits that what I have been saying all along is correct. I think an apology is in order.

Hey Philli! Went to the link and listened to the interview. I admit Maria was not in such good shape in the past! I agree with you, especially post injury she was not as good. But now dont get me wrong, but I dont think Maria admitted she is not as strong as the other players now. The key here is the tense Maria is using when describing her difficulty between matches which is past tense. Listen to interview again if you can and you will notice that Maria said that she actually improved her physical condition to withstand such situations, tough matches close to each other, whereas in the past she couldnt cope with it. Again I agree and sorry if in the past I missunderstood any of this, I know she wasnt as good before, but since last year her physical condition has improved to the point that now she is not having such troubles. Since the start 2011 she is 19-1 in 3setters, a record that confirms this improvement of hers.

In short I think Maria was talking about the past, not the present. At least that is what I understand from listening to the interview when she says and I quote :

" I know I can physically withstand a tough match and then in a couple of days or maybe one day or even the next day, I can go out and play another tough match, whereas before I almost felt like, you know, I had to save my strength, because I wasnt physically as strong and didnt recover as well for the matches to come later, so I think that is one of the most important keys for me."

You were right Philli, but that was the "before Thomas-era Maria", since last year she has improved greatly dont you think?

Yes Val, that's the point I was trying to make. In the past...until recently, even, if she had two three setters in a tournament, it spelled doom and she was burned out for the matches that mattered.

But, lets face it, she isn't going to say that..now.. she still has to do it while she is riding on the crest of a wave, now is she? Time will tell if her total physical condition has improved to the point where she can maintain full power throughout an entire tournament. She's guaranteed a Bye in all tournaments now...except of course Grand Slams which dont have Byes, so she only has to play 5 matches when all the cannon fodder is playing 6.

We'll see how she gets on. No coaching in RG so she needs to use her head if things get difficult.. hope she's up to that...she never was in the past.

It is time for Maria Sharapova to find a solution to beat Serena Williams the next time.

The only solution is to find a good strategy that makes Serena very weak.

If Masha wants to be too far forward in tennis, Serena should not be an obstacle for her.

Serena should not be anymore the hate pet of Masha, even if some people think that Serena still can defeat Masha.

I have a feeling that Masha will find the solution to defeat Serena.

Anyway Masha should be ready to defeat any strong tennis player and not only Serena.

"Here's who can stop Maria Sharapova"

Maria Sharapova has traveled a long, long way from a hospital gurney following her shoulder surgery in October of 2008 to the title she earned in Rome on Sunday. But even her most ardent supporters might have been hard put to guess that she would emerge as the closest thing the WTA has to the ATP's "king of clay," Rafael Nadal.

After Sharapova's queenly, if gritty, performance on the rain-drenched court in Rome, where she survived a three-hour match -- plus a two-hour rain delay -- against Li Na, she has to be the on-paper favorite to win the French Open.

Or does she?

Sure, Sharapova now has won two of the three biggest tournaments on the trail to Roland Garros (Stuttgart and Rome). But there's one massive storm cloud still on her horizon as we approach the grand finale of this long Euro-clay swing: Serena Williams.

Serena's fans will quickly note that their heroine bypassed Stuttgart and then waxed the No. 2 Sharapova but good -- again -- in the quarterfinals just the other week in Madrid. That win lifted Serena's head-to-head with Sharapova to 8-2, without the loss of a set in their past two meetings. For good measure, Serena then bumped off No. 1 Victoria Azarenka for that title.

It looked like Maria might get one more chance to figure out No. 6 (with a bullet) Serena. They were on track to meet in the final of Rome, but Serena pulled out before her semifinal against Li, citing a back injury. No matter how much Serena's back hurts, it's probably not as much as the ache in Sharapova's mind when she looks at their recent history -- and what it may portend for the French Open.

But Sharapova will have one big, if not exactly guaranteed, source of solace rolling into Paris, and that's Serena's history of struggle in that cathedral of red clay. Serena has not been beyond the quarterfinals at Roland Garros since 2003, the year after she won her lone title at that major. That's a long time, with a lot of bad karma to overcome.

By contrast, Sharapova was a semifinalist last year (l. to Li) and a semifinalist on '07 as well (l. Ivanovic). And she has to be feeling pretty good about her game -- at least on the days when she's dialed in.

Sharapova takes a lot of what you would have to call bad losses, no doubt about it. Two of the most recent were inflicted by Serena. But it's also clear by now that one of Maria's outstanding talents is the ability to wipe those blowouts off her hard drive.

This is the woman who lost the Australian Open final early this year to Azarenka, 6-3, 6-0 and then dropped the Indian Wells final to the Belarusian in straights sets as well. But Sharapova turned the tables in the Stuttgart final, allowing the No. 1 player just five games in a 6-1, 6-4 pasting.

This relentlessness in Sharapova, this unwillingness to be denied combined with a facility for living in the future is an admirable trait. You can see it in the way she's evolved from a player who seemed to have no chance on clay, what with her powerful but stiff athleticism, limited repertoire of shots and disinterest in long rallies, into a woman who's learned that the secret to success on that surface lies more in imposing your game than altering it to suit the pace.

Given how well Maria and Serena have been playing, it's possible that they'll meet as early as in the quarterfinals. But bear in mind that Serena just hasn't been a commanding figure in Paris in a long, long time. Sharapova will take some comfort and confidence from that and how much it will help her is an open question.

Maria may be the queen of clay for now, but Serena is here to remind us of those sagacious words penned by Shakespeare: "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown."

Dartagnan: Sharapova is also the Queen of modern tennis so nobody can stop her. Anyway Masha should be ready to defeat any strong tennis player and not only Serena.

Masha really wants to win the Roland Garros tournament.

We should remember that Kuznetsova & Myskina of Russia have already won it in the past. So Sharapova will be the third girl in Russia to win it.

Masha is still the N°1 tennis player in Russia.

Let me start praying for Maria not being in the same half of the draw as Serena. If Maria is mentally ready, she has a big chance to go all the way this year in Paris. There is 1 obstacle ...........SERENA !! RG is the 4th tournament in 5 weeks and that worries me, I'll hope she will be fresh in the head. Maria, I wish you a great time in Paris , enjoy , " it isn't over untill I say it is " !!

Maria is a winner and from shoulder surgery til today has simply proven my point. Sure she wants to win another Grand Slam and that's her goal, no doubt!!

So let's wish her well and winning many more Grand Slams from today on!!!
